This is one sentence summary that I use with my students for books, articles and any other text where I want them to find the main idea. It has them put together short phrases or words that combine to form a intelligent complex sentence using different prepositional phrases and sentence parts. This could be used for anything! I have had them complete one on their own per chapter as we read a book together in class and students really enjoy sharing their creations!
Tips: 1. Model! Students need to see the process and need to understand if a sentence captures the main idea or not. 2. Use only a word or a short phrase per box! You will find that students want to write a longer phrase than necessary for some of the boxes and will have trouble making their sentence make sense.
