Lesson Plans are based on the Constructivist Theory (students construct their own understanding of the world through hands-on experiences and reflecting. The teacher serves as a facilitator and creates new understandings through coaching, moderating, suggesting and questioning. These lessons will enable students to:
• be active participants in the learning process
• construct knowledge from experience
• learn through personal interpretation of the world
• problem solve
• use authentic tasks, experiences, settings, and assessments
• learn holistically
• learn based on individual needs (differentiation)

Standards (Florida Sunshine State Standards and Common Core)
SC.5.N.1.1 - Define a problem, use appropriate reference materials to support scientific understanding, plan and carry out scientific investigations of various types such as: systematic observations, experiments requiring the identification of variables, collecting and organizing data, interpreting data in charts, tables, and graphics, analyze information, make predictions, and defend conclusions.
SC.5.N.2.1 - Recognize and explain that science is grounded in empirical observations that are testable; explanation must always be linked with evidence.
CCSS ELA Standards: R.I.#1, R.I. #4, R.I.#10

The students will be able to:
• identify how scientists use tools to complete investigations (balance, graduated cylinder, beaker, measuring cup, meter stick, ruler, measuring tape, science notebook)
• select and use appropriate science tools
• use tools to measure volume, mass, and distance
• will explain the need for safety in a science lab
