This activity encourages students to use words and phrases they already know when doing their work as the translations can often change the meaning of what they are trying to say.
Students are given just shy of twenty different phrases in English that are difficult to translate into French. Their task is to first write the whole phrase into Google translate and write what they got (in French). Then, they must take each word individually and put it into wordreference and find out the translation there. At the end of the activity, the teacher will give the students the correct way to say these things.
A great follow-up activity is for students to discuss the pros and cons of each translator as well as the pros and cons of translators as a whole.
