- 55 onsets (1, 2 and 3 letters)
- 132 rimes (1-4 letters)
Encourage your early readers to use the strategy of analogy by applying their known rime to the unknown word they're trying to read. Use this resource as a follow up to reading or as an independent game.
Print the onsets on one card colour and the rimes on another (it may be helpful to print 2-3 lots of the onsets to have an amount closer to that of the rimes). Laminate, then cut the cards up.
Mix and match to explore different onset-rime combinations.
Play a popcorn type game by picking one card of each colour and checking if they match to make a word (unknown words can be checked in the dictionary). If the cards form a word, they can be kept, with the winner being the player who gains the most pairs.
