I created these picture cards as an activity to use during my guided reading groups for onset sounds. I wanted an activity that was able to be differentiated for all of my different learners. I focused on consonant sounds only - no vowels -in this activity.
There are 24 different images included (48 total cards).
The first 6 pages can be used as an activity where students use a clothespin to mark the correct onset sound they hear in each picture. They could also use small clear chips or counters to mark the correct onset sound. You could also laminate the onset sound cards and use a dry-erase marker with them.
The following 6 pages do not include letter choices and instead include blank boxes to write or to match with letters. This can be used as an extension for students who are ready for this. Laminate the cards and have the students use a dry-erase marker to write the onset sound’s letter, or have them use letter tiles. Included are letters that you can laminate and cut up to use. You may prefer to use letter tiles that you already have, such as letter beads, letter magnets, or Bananagrams.
All of the images are black and white to help save that ink!
