The idea behind Open Questions in math is to provide students with a way to think
about and solve problems in a variety of ways, and encourage more than one
correct answer. If you’re looking for at break from the usual word problems,
and especially if you encourage students to use a variety of strategies to think
about, discuss, and solve math questions, then this resource is for you!
Every question in this resource is designed to allow for differentiation based on
each student’s understanding. So you don’t have to group students according to
level or prior knowledge. Instead, one question works for students at various
levels. Their answers will vary in complexity and understanding. This encourages
participation and allows students choice in how they answer the questions.
There are four types of open questions
in this resource:
- Similarities and Differences
- Turn-Around Questions
- Create a Sentence
- Other Open Questions
