I have successfully used this graphic organizer to teach my 3d and 4th grade students the structure of an open response to a story or a text. First, students need to understand the question and paraphrase it, then respond to it in a complete sentence. After that, they closely reread the text to find evidence to support their statement, record it in the organizer, and provide a conclusion. After students understand and retain the structure of an open response and can do it on their own with all the components of the response, the graphic organizer can be removed (gradual release of responsibility).
Additionally, it has a traffic light writing strategy color coding.
