I have created some slides for a very, very powerful 30 (or so) minute activity that my class and I do during Fridays.
During Open Session, it is student-run, but teacher-facilitated. It is anonymous. Here's how it goes:
- Students will write something that's going through their mind (family, school ,friends, etc.) that is bothering them
- They can choose to write their name on the index card, but it will not be read aloud
- The teacher reads one index card aloud and waits for students to put their color cards (blue, red, yellow --- all means different things, which will be explained in the slides) up to speak up
- The teacher can choose to read the next index card when the time is right
This has become my student's favorite weekly activity and they feel sad when we have to skip it. On top of that, it allows students to express themselves, be compassionate peers, and to learn to not only listen, but to also contribute. I hope you and your class will enjoy it as much as I do.
