This phonics-in-disguise activity is adaptable, according to your curriculum and the needs of your students in first or second grade.
The kids have so much fun playing educational game that they don't even know they are learning!

★3 different Bingo Mats
★Open Syllable poster
In most bingo games, words are already printed on the mats, so students only have to read the words when they play.
But in this kit, students must read and write, so learning is reinforced. Students practice both decoding (sounding out) and encoding (spelling) phonetic words and word parts. They may also pick up some words by sight along the way!
There are two main parts to the game:
1. Students create their own Bingo Mats by writing words or syllables in each square.
2. Students play the game by taking turns reading the randomly-drawn Open Syllable Cards, and marking the words on their individual mats.
This reading and spelling game provides wonderful opportunities to review:
-the terms letter, word, vowel, consonant
-the long vowel sounds, including long-y (long-i sound)
-what a syllable is
-blends and consonant digraphs
-hard and soft c and g
Open syllables are one of the first types of syllable that students learn about. However, you can play the game without mentioning the term syllable at all.
The Open Syllable Cards include both whole words that are one open syllable, and first (open) syllables from longer real words. You can tell your students that, when they read these first syllables, they are taking the first steps toward reading longer words!
The words and syllables have been carefully chosen with attention to balancing vowels, consonants, and consonant combinations.
The duration of the game will vary between about 30 and 60 minutes, depending on the materials you use.
Enjoy the game!
