Do your students have trouble with open and closed syllables? Try this activity!
Syllable Houses! Are your students having a hard time with open and closed syllables? Use these houses to help! There are two posters with definitions to post in your classroom, and 19 syllable houses to practice! These really helped it click for my students that were having a hard time understanding. Print out the houses and cut up the left hand side of the door and across the top of the door. Fold the door back so it opens and closes. Explain what an open or closed syllable is, and have students practice reading the words.
Open: The door is open. The vowel can shout it’s name!
me, we, be, he, hi, go, so
Closed: The door is closed. The vowel is still shouting its name but since the door is closed all we hear is the short vowel sound.
web, wed, bed, bet, Ben, hem hen meg, men met wet hit, hip, him gob got, sob, sot nod, not.
I have had many requests for these in color, so here they are!
**This is the same as my black and white syllable house, but these are in color!**
