Who doesn't love a great Egg Drop project? This is such a fun project. Students get to use both creative and critical thinking during this challenge. Students are challenged to invent and engineer a device that will prevent an egg from breaking when dropped from the height of a second story on a building. I have local firemen come in and drop our devices on the final day of the project. They continue to raise the height for those that don't break on round 1.
Students have to think about a design that will provide shock absorbency to protect the egg during landing and adding drag to cause air resistance and slow the device down. I use this project to really stress the importance of scientific note taking by having the students complete three trials with journals for each. Students are also expected to make several modifications while testing to improve the design.
I have included the project description, students work examples of both journals and devices, helpful hints for parents about testing and observations, and a rubric to assess student work.
