The document is designed to help students practice the writing of an opinion text.
It is a differentiation tool that helps weaker students improve their writing skills.
It has two opinion text writing practice topics (5 questions to choose from) + you get a free reproducible template workbook to use for your own questions.
Completing the writing process step-by-step helps students to focus more on the different phases of the writing process. Often, students do not spend the time to plan, correct and revise their texts (I`m talking about my high school experience), so this document makes them go through the whole writing process. Normally, we would expect that Grade 10 or 11 students, for instance, use the writing process effectively. Although, this is not the case when we teach mixed ability groups or students with learning difficulties.
Effectiveness of the workbook?
I have already used this document with four very weak ESL students who had learning difficulties (one of them very dyslexic). By the end of the school year, their writing has improved and they have also used correcting and revising strategies effectively (using colours, identifying structure, correcting mistakes etc.) in other written productions, especially during exams.
