About this Product
This opinion essay unit provides basic opinion writing teaching points and resources based on the Common Core Writing Standard. I have used this product in my 3rd and 4th grade classrooms. This unit contains resources that could also be used for 2nd-5th grade. Please be sure this product will fit you and your students’ needs before purchasing.

This unit provides topic ideas and resources for any opinion piece. You could use a text as a basis for the opinion piece or use this unit to simply kick off Opinion Writing in your classroom. The writing lessons do not need to be taught in the exact order. Also, some of the teaching points you could use as small group lessons if you find that only some of your students need the lesson.

What this Product Includes
*Opinion Essay Writing Teaching Points: This Unit Planner is a list of Writing Teaching Points for Opinion Writing organized by Planning, Drafting, Editing, & Revising.

*Topic Ideas for an Opinion Essay Chart: a list of common topics appropriate for an Opinion Essay. You might use this list to help students generate an idea for an Opinion Topic OR you could use these topics when searching for texts to support Opinion Writing in your classroom.

*Debatable Topics: This list of questions is similar to the Topic Ideas. This is a list of question about debatable topics. This document requires students to take a stance on the topic. I used this document to help students generate ideas for their Opinion Writing.

Writer's Notebook Anchor Charts
The anchor charts included in this product are meant for students to have anchor charts at their fingertips in their Writer’s Notebooks. I don’t know about you, but wall space is always an issue in my classroom. Also, storing and keeping track of chart paper can sometimes stretch our organizational skills to the limits! I have found one of the best ways to support my students is to treat their notebooks like a tool in which they can find the strategies and skills taught whenever they need it. In this way, what we teach our students is not just a one day occurrence, but they have a “forever tool.”

Some of the Notebook Anchor Charts included are:
*Writing an Opinion Essay
*Hooks & Effective Endings
*Opinion Writer’s Checklist
*Writing a Thesis Statement for Opinion Essay
*Planning a Thesis Statement (Notebook Chart/Tool)
*Instead of SAYS… - a chart to help students vary the word “says” when citing the text.
*Transition Words for Opinion or Persuasive Writing
*Sentence Starters & Transitional Phrases for Opinion Writing
*Paragraphs with Purpose

Planning & Drafting
*Sorting My Evidence (Planning Page) This page can help your students organize their information to be sure the evidence they are using are supporting their reasons.
*Opinion Writing Planner 4 Square (Planning Page)
*Boxes & Bullets Planning Paper
*Publishing Paper
*Opinion Writer’s Checklist
*Structure of an Opinion Essay Anchor Chart for the Classroom

See the preview to see what else is included! I highly recommend buying the Narrative, Opinion, & Informational Writing Bundle which includes the Narrative Unit with some basics to help implement Writer's Workshop in your classroom. The Informational Unit has other charts for Craft Moves and Elaboration which could also be useful when teaching and supplement this Unit very well. All of my units work very well with Lucy Calkins' Writing & Reading Units of Study.
