This lesson was created to support teaching common core standards. The standard this lesson addresses is CCSSW.4.1.a and b which is opinion writing. There are two lessons related to writing opinions with supporting details. The first lesson focuses on what an opinion is and how to write a strong opinion about a topic, book, or character. The second lesson extends what was taught previously by adding supporting details like reasons and examples. The purpose is for students to become proficient at expressing their opinions about topics and texts. This lesson could be used for grades other than 4th, but was written specifically for 4th grade. The lessons start out with a clear objective and flows from teacher modeling to practicing together and ending with some independent practice. There are frames and starters provided as well as clear explanations and places to monitor understanding. You can display the lesson to the whole class, use certain pages to scaffold, or use it in a small group.
I've been successful with this lesson in the past and hope that you find it useful as well! Feel free to message me if you have questions.
