Buy in bulk and save! Everything you need to teach first graders opinion writing is here. This pack includes all the pet, food, fairy tale and candy opinion writing pieces described in my store for first graders. These writing samples are powerful mentor texts that show children what they should and shouldn’t do when writing opinion pieces.
Here are some ideas for how you can use these mentor texts. First, you can post the papers on a bulletin board or pocket chart to show children what good writing looks like. The mentor texts serve as a great visual reminder, anchor chart and/or rubric for the students as they craft their own opinion pieces. Students can refer to the anchor papers to remember what a 4, 3, 2 and 1 look like. Another idea is to make them part of an interactive bulletin board. The students can label each paper with a 4, 3, 2 or 1. Additionally, you could also use the papers as a springboard for a discussion on the qualities of good opinion pieces. Students can work in groups and decide what number to assign each paper. Finally, another idea is to bind the papers together as a book. This book could serve as a reference manual for the students as they work on opinion pieces.
Many teachers have shared with me that these mentor texts have helped their students become better writers! I hope they can help you, too!
