Children learn to write by looking at “mentors” or models. These pieces serve as great mentor texts for kids in grades 4, 5, and 6. The Common Core Standards place special emphasis on opinion/argument writing, so these essays will help your students become better at writing in this genre. These essays can serve as a springboard for a discussion on what constitutes good opinion/argument writing. Included are three essays (one on chocolate, one on gumdrops and one on lollipops), a graphic organizer, a transition word hand-out, a sheet with tips on how to craft opening and closing sentences, and blank paper for children to construct their own pieces. These resources are great for planning a unit on opinion writing!
