PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

Information about opinion writing, persuasive writing, and argumentative writing is presented on mini-posters that show a) the features of each type of writing, b) key words and phrases used in each type of writing, and c) signal words used in each type of writing, in lists that are differentiated for writing proficiency. Also included in this resource are a pre-writing graphic organizer and an example of the graphic organizer that is filled in, which students can use as a model. Text is written in language that English Language Learners at an intermediate proficiency level and up and native English speakers will understand. A list of the ELA Common Core Writing standards that this product addresses is also provided.

All the mini-posters and graphic organizers are available in color and black-and-white. You can display the color versions on an interactive whiteboard when presenting this material to your class or use it in a literacy center and you can photocopy and distribute the black-and-white versions to students, who can keep them in writing journals and use them as references in school or at home. There are three different lists of signal words commonly used in opinion, persuasive, and argumentative writing for beginning, intermediate, and advanced writers. Younger students and ELLs at a lower proficiency level will find the first list most helpful and intermediate proficiency level ELLs and older students who are not especially strong writers will probably find the second list most useful, while ELLs at an advanced proficiency level and native English-speaking students who are strong writers will benefit from the third list of signal words. There is an explanation in the Notes to the Teacher that explains how to identify which list is for which level.

Whether you use this resource to introduce or review these forms of writing, or as references when doing writing assignments, this product is sure to help your students with their opinion, persuasive, and argumentative writing.
