Everyone has an opinion, but not everyone can support it. Opinion writing is one of my favorite things to teach. Students can blossom into great writers when they actually care for what they are writing about!
This construction themed series is designed to be taught in teacher-led small groups, but could be taught in large group as well. In this opinion writing product you will find over 50 pages of writing support……
BLUEPRINTS- The main teaching tool/example for students is color coded and leveled. There are three different blueprints for different levels of writers. Some are much more detailed than the others. The blueprints contain a topic sentence, an opinion statement, reasons to support the opinion, examples, and a conclusion statement.
TOOLBOXES- This student activity has students identify the parts of an opinion paragraph, color them to match the blueprint, cut them out, arrange them in the correct order on their construction site, and then finally glue them into place on a worksheet.
WORKSHEETS- There are two types of worksheets included in this product. The first is sample writing for the kids to revise. Students will look at different levels of writing and go through a checklist on the page to see if it has everything a good opinion piece needs. Then revisions can be made to the writing. This will help students learn how to self-edit their own work. This works great in small or large group work. The second worksheets are similar to the TOOLBOX. Students will identify transition words, opinions, reasons, examples, etc. and color code them.
GRAPHIC ORGANIZERS- There are several graphic organizers to help students organize their thoughts and ideas.
TASK CARDS- There are 8 task cards with opinion writing prompts. These are perfect for center work and to use along with the graphic organizers.
WRITING PROMPT WORKSHEETS- Over 8 writing prompts on leveled writing worksheets (16 total)
MINI POSTERS- Posters for opinion sentence starters, transition words, self-edit checklists, and informal rubrics with communication cards to provide feedback when you can’t have one-on-one time with students.
