Help students form and write opinions by considering both sides of an issue with these four mini-lessons. Based on the "Plus, Minus & Interesting" model, organizers can be used in a variety of ways: opinion/persuasive writing, fiction stories, current events, research projects, and class debates.

General Information: This packet contains three mini-lessons that can be used as an introduction or review to opinion writing. Opportunities for modeling, cooperative learning, independent work, and assessment are included.

Goals & Objectives: Student will be able to write three types of opinion paragraphs using facts, evidence, and examples appropriate to each type by:
• Understanding the difference between fact, opinion, and claims.
• Identifying three types of opinion writing and key concepts for each.
• Appropriately using key elements in three paragraphs.
• Participating in whole class discussion and paired sharing.
• Effectively uses graphic organizer to see both sides of an issue/topic.

Pre-Assessment Strategy: Two opportunities for assessing/practicing are included in the first mini-lesson.

Formative Assessment Strategy: Questions for thinking, sharing and discussion are included for each of the mini-lessons. Those questions are embedded on instructional forms.

Summative Assessment Strategies: Two rubrics are included. Graphic organizers represent one assessment. The second will assess the opinion paragraph(s) written by each student. Packet allows for up to three different paragraphs to be assigned.

Mini-Lesson #2 - Personal Opinion:
• Focus/Skill - Defining personal opinions without use of facts or evidence.
• Topic Question - What is the best holiday?
• Infographic Example - Halloween is the best holiday.
• Activity #1 - Marking to remember.
• Group/Pair Discussion Prompt - What information is missing?
• Activity #2 - Writing prompts with 15 options to choose from.

Mini-Lesson #3 - Argumentative Opinion:
• Focus/Skill - Defining argumentative opinions with use of facts or evidence.
• Topic Question - Do mermaids exist?
• Infographic Example - Mermaids may be real.
• Activity #1 - Marking to remember for helpful evidence.
• Group/Pair Discussion Prompt - What is credible or valid?
• Activity #2 - Writing prompts with 15 options to choose from.

Mini-Lesson #4 - Persuasive Opinion:
• Focus/Skill - Defining elements of persuasive writing.
• Topic Question - Do students need recess to learn?
• Infographic Example - Recess is needed for learning.
• Activity #1 - Marking to remember for viewpoint evidence.
• Group/Pair Discussion Prompt - What are common topics for persuasive writing?
• Activity #2 - Writing prompts with 15 options to choose from.
