This unit/bundle was designed to address CCSS W.2.1 in my second grade classroom. It could also be used in first grade with scaffolding and third as a review.
The bundle is organized into three sections.
Section 1 addresses facts and opinions. It includes two min posters, a sorting activity, a sorting worksheet, and Opinion Statement Starters.
Section 2 addresses writing the opinions. The topics I begin with are "Are Rules Important at School?" and "___________ is a Great Friend". Then, I have included two drafting sheets. The first one is for beginning writing and the second requires three reasons to support the opinion. Finally, I included two publishing sheets which can be used for topics as well.
I call section 3 Assessing. I have three rubrics that I use. The first is for the beginning writing pieces as we are starting spelling instruction, grammar expectations, and learning just what goes in an opinion. The other two increase in expectations as I expect more. There are also two sheets of bookmarks. These can be laminated, and students can use a dry erase marker to edit and revise their own pieces. I also included a reading response sheet. Students will write their opinion about stories they've read and put them in their reader's notebook.
I have found all of these to be very helpful, and hope you do too.
