Should Students Be Allowed to Chew Gum at School?
As Common Core continues to develop and find its place in our classrooms, we are constantly looking for ways to incorporate authentic reading and writing opportunities for our students. This is especially challenging when trying to give younger students authentic writing practice in a meaningful way. This unit provides exactly that- authentic resources for your students to evaluate and unpack while deciding which pet to get for your classroom or home. Each year I’ve done this writing unit with my students, I’ve found that they are incredibly motivated
because they are writing for a real purpose! This writing unit is aligned with the Common Core opinion/persuasive writing standards.

When this video was posted, I was using iPod Touches with my 2nd grade class; each student had access to an iPod Touch to do their research. If you do have classroom devices, wonderful! However, they are not necessary to do this writing unit successfully!
This video generated lots of questions about the resources I used. And this packet was born! I did my best to explain, in great detail, each step of the writing project from start to finish.
