This is a unit that focuses on the second grade writing standard:

2.1 Write opinion pieces in which they introduce the topic or book they are writing about, state an opinion, supply reasons that support the opinion, use linking words (e.g., because, and , also) to connect opinion and reasons, and provide a concluding statement or section.

The unit gives 10 mini lessons that are divided up into standard writers workshop style. Each mini lessons provides a whole group discussion with modeling, individual writing time called Writers Write!, and time to share called Writers Share!. The 10 mini lessons focus on the following:

•Mini Lesson 3: Generating Meaningful Ideas
•Mini Lesson 4: Narrowing the Topic
•Mini Lesson 5: Grabbing the Readers Attention

•Mini Lesson 7: Reasons That Support
•Mini Lesson 8: Putting it all Together
•Mini Lesson 9: Genres of Opinion Writing
•Mini Lesson 10: Drafting

This unit provides students with rich engaging lessons where students build the foundation necessary first teaching what an opinion is and how to state an opinion. It also incorporates teacher modeling, building anchor charts, analyzing mentor texts in small groups and so much more!
