Mentor Text: Duck! Rabbit! by Amy Krouse Rosenthal and Illustrated by Tom Lichtenheld
This little unit is intended to introduce Opinion Writing to kindergarten, first, and second graders. The simple illustrations, clear dialogue, and witty banter lend itself to lower elementary learners. In second grade, I spend the first 6 weeks of school reviewing first grade writing skills. As a way to assess where my students are I give 3 writing prompts: one for narrative writing, one for opinion writing, and one for informational writing. In order to get their little minds warmed up, I spend the first two days of the week reviewing the writing style and then administer the district writing prompt over the course of 3 days. The 2 day unit utilizing the award winning Duck! Rabbit! book is intended to review and introduce opinion writing concepts prior to taking our school district's writing assessment. Duck! Rabbit! lends itself to some light hearted fun in your classroom!
The unit includes:
2 days of mini-lessons
1 graphing survey
11 chevron print Opinion Writing anchor charts
Headings for a class anchor chart recording student opinions
1 graphic organizer to record student opinion and reasons
2 writing templates for writing an opinion paper
