This product contains a 3-page fill-in-the-blank outline for opinion and persuasive essays. The graphic organizer breaks down the five-paragraph essay structure into bite-sized pieces so that students can construct a thesis statement, topic sentences, and body paragraphs.
The graphic organizer requires students to slow down and carefully draft an outline before developing a first draft. The student will provide the prompt and their opinion about the prompt before writing a full thesis statement, which is broken into three parts. Each part represents a future body paragraph.
Students will also be prompted to provide a simple citation for their evidence by checking off their source from a short list, and then providing a title and author for the source. These sections are intended to remind students to cite their sources, and allow them to develop their sources before writing a full citation.
Space is provided on the last page to allow students the opportunity to practice writing a body paragraph based on one of their reasons and examples from their outlines. This allows the teacher to quickly check for understanding. Try using it as an exit ticket!
The simple formatting of the worksheet makes it accessible for middle and high school students, and makes it adaptable for various essay topics.
