Help students build knowledge of core vocabulary and basic concepts using this set of 20 illustrated opposite pairs. Pictures are presented two ways to ensure you are prepared to meet your clients at their level! Repeated exposures encourage mastery of targets.
The following opposite pairs are targeted: clean/dirty, throw/catch, fast/slow, bottom/top, together/apart, cold/hot, new/old/, big/little, floating/sinking, in/out, thick/thin, on/off, day/night, broken/fixed, tall/short, long/short, start/finish, black/white,fat/skinny, and empty/full.
CLINICAL TARGET MASH-UP: Present opposite pairs with corresponding text labels in of fields of 2, or use pause prompting to encourage your students to “Complete the Opposites”. Students “Complete the Opposites” when targets are presented beside a question mark with the expectation that a student will work toward generating the corresponding opposite. The work itself becomes the reward as students are rewarded with their “language product” (a corresponding opposite, e.g. “hot”) which appears “magically” (by flipping to the next slide!) at the exact moment they say it.
Take it up a notch and work toward mastery of concepts by encouraging students to generate sentences about pictures using targeted opposites. This provides a nice foundational activity to segue into expressive language activities targeting similarities/differences.
