An optical activity where students make a spinning disc called a thaumatrope that has an image on each side; for example, one side has a horse and the other has a hurdle. When spun quickly the images will appear to merge into one picture. Simple STEM and what fun! Directions to make the disc are completely described.
The seven different templates listed below are provided. A blank template is also provided for those that want to give their own a try!
-fish in an aquarium
-dinosaur chasing a child
-vase holding flowers
-bird in the cage
-horse jumping over a hurdle
-butterfly landing on a flower
“Thaumatropes were popular toys in the 1800’s.”
