This is an engaging individual or cooperative activity for students to form silly sentences using preterite verbs. Provided that you have dice for your students to use, there is no prep involved. The pictures include -ar verbs, but some could be represented in other ways, including the following:
1. levantar pesas/ hacer ejercicios/ ir al gimnasio
2. pasar tiempo con su/mi mamá/ abrazar a mi/su mamá
3. matar una mosca
4. gastar dinero
6. hablar por teléfono
Dice are needed for this activity. You could use regular dice, or you could use colored dice that correspond to each roll.
Students should be guided prior to activity in how to construct a sentence using the ‘ago’ structure with the preterite. The combinations that result from the dice rolls will likely be nonsensical and funny, which is particularly amusing to students.
FOR REGULAR DICE: If you do not have dice in various colors, students may roll the same dice four separate times to achieve the same result. The numbers beside the colors represent which column receives which roll.
EXAMPLE: If your first roll is a 1, your subject is YO. If your second roll is a 4, your verb is GASTAR DINERO. If your third roll is 5, it would represent 5 MONTHS AGO, and if you were to roll a 1 on your fourth roll, it would indicate ‘en el baño.’ So the resulting sentence would be “Yo gasté dinero hace cinco meses en el baño.” OR “Hace cinco meses que yo gasté dinero en el baño.”
Further instruction included in file. Students really enjoy this activity and it is an engaging way for them to learn the 'ago' structure.
