This writing project brings students and older members of the community together in a mutually satisfying and educationally powerful way.
The assignment involves two major components: an interview and the writing of a biographical sketch with the information obtained in the interview. There is much flexibility in how you might approach classwork associated with the assignment. The handout provides everything necessary to get the job done, but you could easily augment with class discussions, pre-writing, peer editing, and publishing a collection of the completed work, which could include photos of the interviewees.
The final products make beautiful additions to student portfolios, bulletin boards, or supplements to the school newspaper or website. They could also be made into slideshow presentations for a speech, journalism, English, or even history class.
Because it brings the generations together to talk, tell their stories, and connect in such a meaningful way, this assignment will prove to be one that you'll use year after year. You'll love it, and your students will, too.
