Product Description
Analyze a Poem: Oranges

This resource is a complete set of student materials for analyzing Gary Soto’s poem “Oranges.” The lesson plan guides students through 3 readings of the poem, each requiring more complex poetry analysis, culminating in a final writing assignment about how the images in the poem work to develop its theme. Included in this poetry analysis resource for “Oranges” are all student materials, a detailed answer key and rubrics for the writing assignments. I designed this resource to be completed in a 90-minute class period. It is suitable for grades 7-9.

In this lesson on “Oranges,” students complete the following:
1. Do Now: Students review definitions to select vocabulary words found in the poem.
2. First Read: Students read to get the gist of the poem, and develop a basic understanding of what happens in each stanza.
3. Second Read: Students analyze the imagery in the poem and connect it to theme.
4. Third Read: Students analyze key lines in the poem, and focus on theme.
5. Final Analysis: Students write one paragraph on theme and imagery using evidence from the poem.

This resource directly addresses the following Common Core Standards: R1 (cite evidence to support analysis of what the text says and draw inferences), R2 (analyze theme), R4 (determine the meaning of unknown words in the text, analyze tone).

This download contains PDF’s of the following:
