Description
This resource is designed for teachers of intermediate or advanced string orchestra students.
It includes arco, down bow, up bow, bow lift, slur, staccato, slurred staccato, hooked bowing, detache, martele, loure/portato, spiccato, sautille, colle, tremolo, staggered bowing, double stop, pizzicato, snap pizzicato, left hand pizzicato, col legno, sul ponticello, and sul tasto. There is also a diagram of divisions of the bow, including the tip, frog, middle, upper half, lower half, and whole bow.
HOW TO USE: I use the individual symbol pages when I am introducing a new skill. I use the poster maker at school to create large versions for anchor charts to post around the room. These would also work well as handouts for student folders or notebooks. My students often refer to these when we are reviewing a symbol or practicing independently.
Note: Many bowings are open to interpretation and not consistently codified. I have included the most commonly used examples and definitions.
