Order in the Library! – Second Grade

Order in the Library is a unit about library organization for primary students. The unit springboards from a story that focuses on orderliness: Mrs. McBloom, Clean Up Your Classroom by Kelly DiPucchio.. Through a series of hands-on activities students are introduced to shelf order of the easy fiction section and the use of shelf markers.

Students hear the featured story and discuss how being neat and organized is helpful in life. The discussion then moves to the library media center and how important it is there as well. Shelf markers are introduced and the students get practical, hands on experience using them correctly. They then reflect on the process through a foldable activity. The next part of the unit focuses on how the easy fiction section is arranged. Students learn to identify and locate authors’ last names and sort them to the correct location in the library media center. They are able to practice and demonstrate these concepts on paper and in “real life.”

I am a firm believer of “practice, practice, practice” so you will find more than one opportunity during this unit for students to show what they know! I know they have learned the concept because I get to see them using their skills for the rest of the year during their check out time!

Comprehensive Lesson Plan Included!

This product includes a complete lesson plan listing the covered standards, lesson objectives, daily lesson plan, assessments and evaluations, differentiated instruction strategies, and correlations to inquiry based learning. Truly, all you have to do is download, print, put in your plan book and teach.

PLEASE NOTE: All three of the Order in the Library units are similar in nature. The focus story is different for each one as are the specific grade level standards.
