A great way to connect math and science! Students will make their way through the different levels of the atmosphere, earning a gold star (or stamp) as they complete each level. The higher they go, the more difficult the problems become!
Problems involve whole numbers only but do use parentheses and exponents. The highest level problems (options – see directions below) involve brackets and division in fraction form.
STEM extension: Have students research each level of the atmosphere as they get there and answer trivia questions based on what they learn.
Answer key included.
Directions & Notes:
*Students solve each set of 4-6 problems using their knowledge of the order of operations.
*Once a student gets all problems in that section correct, they get a gold star (or stamp) to put on the star in the “Congratulations” box and are able to move on to the next section.
*Repeat for each section until each student is “out of this world!”
*NOTE: My students get a 100% once they reach the thermosphere (complete 3 sections). They 4th section is not part of the grade but is required if there is still time left in class.
*Thermosphere (last level): We do not cover fraction or bracket problems in class. I put a fully worked example of each type of problem on the board with any notes that may be helpful. I will answer questions only after students have attempted at least one of these on their own. Once one figures it out, they are generally happy to help each other (gives them a chance to show off )
