Help your students solve expressions using order of operations through an engaging and kinesthetic circuit activity!
To understand mathematics concepts, students need to practice, practice, practice through, well, practice problems! This resource helps students practice solving expressions using order of operations in a more fun way then just silently at their desk. Students are free to roam about the classroom and to solve at their own pace. Students can self-check, leaving the teacher free to roam around and help struggling students.
How does it work?
1. Teachers must set up the activity by copying recording sheets for students, printing and posting answer signs around the classroom, and printing the answer key.
2. Once ready for the activity in class, teachers must count off so that each student is starting with a different problem. In this particular activity, teachers should count off from 1-12.
3. Students should begin working on the number problem to which they were assigned.
4. Once students have finished their assigned problem, they should look around the room to find their answer to make sure they are correct. If they do not see their answer, something is wrong, and they should try the problem again or ask for help, if needed.
5. Once students have located the correct answer, they should move to the problem number underneath the correct answer on the sign.
6. If done correctly, students should be sent on a scavenger hunt to all problems on the recording sheet.
7. When finished, students should bring the completed sheet to the teacher to check over and make sure all needed work is shown.
8. If time, teachers can give out a homework sheet or extension to students who have finished the activity.
