As students become more fluent with basic operations, they are ready to take that understanding and move toward more algebraic thinking. It is important that as students begin to simplify and evaluate expressions they have a solid understanding of the order of operation rules. This task moves all students forward in their ability to use basic operations to solve expressions and apply them in the appropriate order. Students will also begin to develop an understanding of grouping symbols and their role in solving expressions.
This task includes a pre-assessment that can be used to place students in appropriate readiness groups. All students will develop a deeper understanding of order of operation rules and be better prepared to evaluate expressions.
