Error Analysis is a way to flex higher order thinking muscles in students. It promotes thinking outside the box. The students LOVE doing this; it makes them feel very smart to be able to detect when someone else makes an error. They are diligent about trying to figure out what error occurred. Each analysis has a different ability level indicated in the top, right hand corner. For example, the lowest level problems with say “L1” for “level 1”. The answer keys provided indicate one POSSIBLE solution. There is one sheet that was purposefully left blank for the teacher to create; this can be used to create PERSONAL error analyses based on student mistakes you have seen in class. These can be used to warm-up activities, small groups, collaborative pairs, or math centers.
