Product Description

In this order of operations escape room themed activity students will need to complete 4 tasks in order to find a lock combination. A background story is included (and is optional to use) on how a group of teachers are attempting to rid the school of calculators. They can be stopped if students find the combination to a lock that is keeping the school security guard trapped (an editable version of this is included so that you can change it to match employees at your school).

To use:

Divide students into up to 6 groups.

Groups are each given the first task they must complete for the order of operations game. Once they complete that task they must use the message they found to lead them to their next task. They continue the process until they locate the missing combination (to make it more fun you can edit the combination code so that it is an actual combination to an actual lock you place in your classroom).

The first task has students answer order of operation themed questions to find a secret message.

The second task has 6 multiple choice questions. Students must simplify expressions using order of operations. Each correct answer corresponds to a letter. Those letters spell out a word that is on the envelope that holds their 3rd task.

The third task is also multiple choice. These questions have students look for mistakes other students made simplifying expressions. The multiple choice letters spell out a secret code. Students must use a cipher wheel (included) to decipher the code leading them to their fourth task.

The fourth task gives students strips they must rearrange to correctly simplify a given expression. One rearranged correctly students will find the strips spell out a secret message giving them the location to the missing combination.

Included:

★ 4 student tasks

★ Printable, labeled envelopes for 2 of the tasks

★ Printable cipher wheel

★ Labels for locations of clues

★ Detailed instructions for each portion of the activity

★ Printable student answer booklet

★ Teacher Answer Key

This activity should take students approximately 40 minutes to complete. It is meant to be completed in one class period.
