Product Description
Everything you need to introduce, review, practice, and/or extend your students’ ability to solve expressions by using the correct Order of Operations (PEMDAS) is in this resource.

Here’s what’s included:

1. A comprehensive 30 slide PowerPoint presentation serves as your introductory lesson and includes:

• Definition of an expression
• Explanation of Order of Operations
• Definition of a mnemonic device
• Several mnemonic device options for PEMDAS
• Correct sequence for Order of Operations
• Several slides with step-by-step instruction for solving expressions using PEMDAS

2. A set of Task Cards focusing on solving expressions

• Student Recording Sheet

3. Worksheets, a total of 4 worksheets (skills progress from simpler to more difficult) that target the following skills:

• Worksheet #1: Problems using all operations; no parentheses or exponents
• Worksheet #2: Problems using all operations with parentheses; no exponents
• Worksheet #3: Problems using all operations with parentheses and exponents
• Worksheet #4: Enrichment skillwork with problems using all operations with parentheses and exponents

As special education teachers, working across grade levels and ability levels is nothing new, as we differentiate on a daily basis. That’s why the worksheets target skills sequentially. It is also why we present content in a variety of formats, to assist with student interest, motivation, and retention. Depending on student ability, worksheets are appropriate for students in grades 3 - 6. For general education teachers, this resource would be used to introduce the topic and work through all or some of the worksheets provided as part of your instruction on Order of Operations.

The task cards included are a great alternative to worksheets! They can be used in a variety of ways. Students can use them individually, in pairs, small groups, or as a whole group activity. Another option is to simply print out the Task Cards Set and the Student Recording Sheet in grayscale, and provide them to students as a "packet" to be worked on as a "When You're Finished" project.

Simply print out the cards, cut, and laminate. I mount each card on to cardstock before laminating, to make them extra sturdy. Store them either in a basket, plastic baggie, envelope, or hole punch each card and store on a binder ring for easy access. If I haven’t yet made my permanent, sturdy colored task cards, I will just print the set out in grayscale and have students work with them as a paper packet. This comes in especially handy if you don’t have a color printer, too. Saves lots of ink!
