Want to get your students excited about order of operations? Then offer them the opportunity to have a relay race! This product comes with both a Flipchart and corresponding student handout. Post the first question on the board, students also have a copy at their desk, and as fast as they can they hold up the flashcard that is displaying the first step they should follow to simplify the expression. The operational symbol flashcards can be downloaded for free in my store. While students are holding up their first flashcard, you are informally assessing students, then slowly you drag the rectangle across the screen to reveal the correct flashcard that students should be holding in the air! Then quickly it is on to the next step, as students are trying to be the first one to correctly hold up their card. After that it is on to practice, both open-ended and multiple choice, including a PARCC/Smarter Balanced type question (Select ALL that apply). The practice questions on the student handout is also on the flipchart. Then finish out the lesson with a higher-order thinking question posed to students to give them the opportunity to turn-and-talk about their understanding of order of operations!
