When I started teaching Order of Operations to my Special Education students I quickly realized that including all of the steps was too overwhelming for my students. So I decided to simplify the steps and I excluded a few that could be added back in later.
So what did I leave? I left Peter Makes Apple Sauce. Parentheses, Multiplication, Addition, Subtraction. These were the operations my students were most familiar with. After simplifying the Order of Operations they really were able to complete the problems. Then I was able to add division and exponents in when they were ready. I hope your students find as much success as mine did!
I have included a Task Card that has the Order of Operations. This can be printed out and given to each student as they learn the correct order to complete the cards. An answer sheet is also included for quick grading.
