This game is played like regular tic-tac-toe, except a player must correctly solve an order of operations problem before marking a space. The first player will choose a space, but both players will solve each of the problems. If a player marks a space, but gives the wrong answer, then the other player can “challenge” the move. If this happens and the players cannot agree on the correct answer, both players will have to raise their hand to check their answers with the teacher. If the answer is proven to be wrong, then the other player gets the mark. The first player to get three in a row wins!
This activity is played in pairs. The whole class can play at the same time or it can be used as a math center or an anchor activity for early finishers. I am always looking for more practice with my Title I Math classes, and my students love playing Tic Tac Toe as opposed to just working on a worksheet!
File includes three tiered worksheets, with two tic tac toe boards on each worksheet.
- Worksheet 1: Only problems involving adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing
- Worksheet 2: Adding, subtracting, multiplying, dividing, and parentheses
- Worksheet 3: Adding, subtracting, multiplying, dividing, parentheses, and exponents
