In this product the students will practice ordering decimals to the hundredths place by looking at different photos of families from around the world and the amount they spend on food in a week. The pictures are from the Hungry Planet Project by Peter Menzel and Faith D’Aluisio found in Time Magazine
. The students will walk around looking at the pictures and writing on their student worksheet the countries and the amount of money they spend. After, they will order these 24 countries in order from least to greatest. There are three extension activities included which are:
1. Bar Graph: This can be done in groups or independently. Students will create a bar graph using the data they found in the gallery walk activity.
2. Homework: The students find out about how much their family spends on food each week and compare it to what the family from the U.S. in the gallery walk activity spends.
3. Next day bellwork: The students will fill out the bellwork card writing the amount of money their family spends on food in a week and then as a whole class will put the numbers in order from least to greatest.
