Lesson Objective: Students will have a better understanding of how books are ordered by common subjects in the library, as well as better understand how Dewey Decimal call numbers are arranged in numerical order from the least to the greatest, which is how many of the books are arranged on the library shelves.
This activity involves making ten books using mock book covers on the following commonly found subjects in the library: Farming, Vehicle Repair, Weather, Pets, Sports, Wild Animals, History of Our Country, Spiders & Insects, Cooking, & Art. The kit also contains 50 flash cards (four per page); each book has five flash cards that fit the books’ subjects.
Students will match the corresponding flash cards to the correct mock books; then the teacher will lead the students to put the books in numerical order, just like the call numbers are arranged on the shelves. Students will find the areas in the library that match the mock books’ call numbers.
This activity teaches students on a smaller scale how books are organized by subject and then by call number, and with the mock books in hand, the call numbers on the spines teaches students how the books are arranged numerically from least to greatest on the library shelves.
