*In North Carolina, The Oregon Trail is taught in 5th grade as part of the Westward Expansion Unit.

**Research indicates that 4th and 5th grade students participating in the regular curriculum are capable of learning between 10-11 new vocabulary words per week. Typically developing students require at least 6 exposures before they begin to learn and recall new words. Students with language and learning disabilities will require specific and explicit instruction in curriculum vocabulary, and will need more than 6 exposures before they demonstrate retention. For these reasons, content specific vocabulary words were included with this packet, and selected words were limited to 10 targets.
