Oregon Trail Readers Theatre: A Guide to the Oregon Trail (as told by trail scouts) is designed to introduce eight sections of the trail that immigrants would have encountered:
Script #1, Location: Independence, Missouri
Script #2, Destination: Fort Kearney
Script #3, Destination: Fort Laramie
Script #4, Destination: Fort Bridger
Script #5, Destination: Fort Hall
Script #6, Destination: Fort Boise
Script #7, Destination: The Dalles
Script #8, Destination: Oregon City
In each drama, six scouts, who’ve recently visited the trail ahead, report back on what they’ve seen and experienced. They describe landmarks, give warnings, make suggestions, and keep travelers updated on what is ahead. Scripts range in length, anywhere from 2 to 6 pages; the entire script is 32 pages in length. Please see the Preview File for a sample, Script #6.
This is NOT a complete Oregon Trail curriculum, but is designed to introduce portions of the trail that students may be studying in other materials: simulations, textbooks, literature books, videos, and more.
We’ve used the dramas with our own 3rd-6th graders with great success. Enjoy!
