All students will eventually need to learn the typical organelles of eukaryotic cells as they progress through their education. The various webquests and online animations that are online for free are ok, but not great. For that reason I was determined to create an interactive tutorial that takes viewers on a journey inside the typical eukaryotic cell in a clear and understandable way. Here it is! I’m very proud of this tutorial.
The tutorial begins by taking readers through an introduction to eukaryotic life and then proceeds to teach about the many organelles and parts to a eukaryotic cell. This is not a simple PowerPoint where students are shown bullet point main ideas. This is very much an interactive tutorial with 135 slides full of engaging images and animations to assist with student learning.
When I use these in my classroom, I will sign my class up to visit the computer lab so each student can sit at a computer and work at their own pace. I have burned this tutorial onto a class set of 30 CD’s that I hand to my students when we arrive at the computer lab. When they finish working, they simply turn in their worksheet and return the CD.
The following organelles and parts of cells are discussed:
plasma membrane, cytoplasm, nucleus, rough ER, ribosomes, Golgi body, vesicles, Mitochondria, lysosomes, smooth ER, centrioles/centrosome, chloroplasts, vacuoles, cell wall.
Along the way, the following concepts and processes are discussed:
endosymbiosis, photosynthesis, cellular respiration, phagocytosis, cytoplasmic streaming, protein synthesis (translation), autolysis, mitosis
