Tangram Puzzle History, and 25 Designs
This is a packet of handouts, the main page is a history of the Chinese tangram, and the remaining pages are 25 different designs that your class can make. The class should either have their own tangrams individually, or they can print out the pieces and cut them out of card stock.
Tangrams are an excellent teaching tool, I vividly recall being taught on them myself when I was ten. They are ideal for the most important type of learning teachers can use: kinesthetic learning, and crossover learning. They are cross discipline learning since the tangram teacher history, spacial reasoning, geometry, and encourages creativity. They are even great for the students (think fidgety boys) to play with quietly as the teachers reads to them.
1. Show the class a design on the overhead for 60 seconds, and see if they can reproduce it from memory.
2. Have the student(s) come up with their own designs and explain what they are.
3. See who can make a design from the overhead and call it out first. Start with the shape of a square first, the basic design of a Tangram.
4. Have the students teach each other their own creations they made.
