There is a dearth of guided reading books that are appropriate to use with upper elementary students. Although we often have students who are reading at the Developmental Reading Assessment (DRA) levels 1-6, those books typically include cartoon pictures of cute animals, or photographs of young children. Although reading the books benefits the reading growth of these students, it is insulting and not motivating.
The Let’s Fold! Books give these upper elementary students age appropriate material, while still scaffolding their reading and letting them read little books. They also give a purpose to reading, and encourage students to think about what they reading, promoting reading comprehension while the student is practicing the early reading skills.
The books include a page at the back with word cards from the story. Cut them out and let your students practice building the sentences from the book!
