This is a fun story about a a kid sitting in English class who is having trouble thinking of what to write for a journal, "quick-write" assignment. His teacher comes over to help him generate ideas, but his mind wanders a bit until he realizes that all his needs to do is to transcribe that wandering. In my story the fictional class is reading the story "Icarus and Daedalus" and the assignment was to write a paragraph about where you would go and how it would feel if you could fly. At the end of the story I have included five multiple choice vocabulary and plot-based questions, along with three free response questions. This story could be the beginning of a much larger unit on Greek and Roman mythology. A natural follow-up would be to read "Icarus and Daedalus", of course which is part of the public domain and accessible on any number of websites depending on the grade and skill level taught.
Another follow-up might be to write this story in the form of a play and have the students perform it. One kid could play the role of Wayne's Brain and say out loud what he thinks in the story while another plays him in the physical form.
