This resource is a critical reading activity involving a scholarly article that outlines some of the proposed origins of patriarchy. Included are connections between patriarchy and early agriculture, Marxist interpretations, the connections between patriarchy and capitalism, etc.
Students read the article using the "attack the text strategy." In this strategy, students mark the text with a purpose, underlining important ideas, circling important words, etc. In the left hand column, they summarize main ideas, and in the right hand column, they annotate. This resource already has some summaries and annotations as a model.
All in all, this was a great conversation starter that got my AP World History class talking about patriarchy. At the end, you could add questions for students to respond to in writing, or just questions for discussion.
