This was an assignment created for my high school Ornithology class.
As part of our unit, students study the evolutionary relationship of birds and how the skeleton, muscles, and organs of birds are adapted for flight. Students studied the first evidences of feathers in the fossil record, and tracked how the anatomy of the animals changed to lead to the ability to fly.
Students chose pre-bird "ancestors" in the bird family tree. Some of the animals were dinosaurs and some were proto-birds. Students created a presentation to show geologic time scale, the living conditions on Earth at that time for their animal, and then focused in on the anatomical features that would be important to flight. Students compared their animal to modern bird anatomy, and discussed how their animal would have lived its life.
Students created presentations using Google Slides or Prezi so that they could turn in a Link to their presentation. This presentation could easily be done in Powerpoint or as a paper poster.
You will receive a 3 page Word document, so you may edit it as needed for you class. There is 1 page of student instructions. Page 2 is a list of possible research subjects. Page 3 has a grading rubric for the presentations.
